MENTOR CONDUCT POLICY
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL MENTORS - - PLEASE READ IN ENTIRETY
As a result of recent discussions with other organizations providing student mentoring services, CIR management has decided to undergo a formal review of its current insurance coverage. As you can imagine, any organization having dealings with minors will have its policies and procedures subject to added scrutiny by its insurance provider. As we grow and become more visible, we want to make sure we have adequate protection and procedures in place for our organization and its staff, volunteers and board members.
We at CIR highly value the commitment and dedication of all our mentors and other volunteers who so generously give of their time and resources. While CIR has had no issues with harassment or misconduct by its staff or volunteers since its inception through the current date, we need to be prudent and diligent as we put more formal policies in place.
Accordingly and effective immediately, until such time as our new insurance policy is in place all volunteers should abide by these rules when dealing with current as well as former mentees, whether in high school or college:
We appreciate that these provisions may come across as onerous to some of you, but please bear in mind why we feel they are necessary at this time. You should feel free to contact me ([email protected]) or David Millstein ([email protected]) with any specific questions or comments. We will keep you current on any changes to these provisions as discussions with our insurance provider move forward.
Thank you again for all you do for CIR and the students we serve.
Sincerely,
Brad Blake
Founder and President
We at CIR highly value the commitment and dedication of all our mentors and other volunteers who so generously give of their time and resources. While CIR has had no issues with harassment or misconduct by its staff or volunteers since its inception through the current date, we need to be prudent and diligent as we put more formal policies in place.
Accordingly and effective immediately, until such time as our new insurance policy is in place all volunteers should abide by these rules when dealing with current as well as former mentees, whether in high school or college:
- Meetings on the RHS campus are to take place in the Career Center unless another onsite location is provided by Angie Arriaga. If the latter, there must be at least one other CIR mentor at that location.
- For any mentee meetings that are to occur off-campus, at least one other CIR mentor or staff member must be present at all times you are with the mentee(s) and any such meetings can only occur at public locations and you cannot be in a vehicle together unless another CIR mentor or staff member is present. Any such off-campus meetings are to occur within a ten-mile radius of the high school unless pre-approval is granted by Angie Arriaga (r[email protected])
- For any off-campus meeting you must make sure that your mentee has a Permission Slip signed by his or her parent on file with Angie Arriaga.
- If you are to meet with a former CIR mentee who has graduated from high school, or is now in college or a graduate of college, any such meeting can only be at a public location.
- For any electronic or phone communication with your current or former mentee(s), there can be absolutely no communication of a romantic or sexual nature or any other communication that could possibly be viewed as abusive, threatening, intimidating, offensive or harassing, and there can be absolutely no discussions on the subject of drugs, substance abuse, criminal or related matters. Any questions about drugs, abuse or other matters should be referred to Angie Arriaga for handling and referral to the appropriate trained professionals.
- If at any time you suspect or are made aware of your or any other CIR mentee being involved in, or the victim of, any abusive, threatening, intimidating, offensive or harassing activity or relationship or involved in or the victim of any criminal activity that could be of possible harm to a CIR mentee or others or to the reputation of CIR, its officers, employees or volunteers, you are to contact Angie Arriaga and David Millstein ([email protected]) immediately. Any family or parental abuse of a minor will be reported by Angie to the County's health services office or other appropriate agency.
